and
The 3rd New York Long Island Companies
are pleased to announce the following event
for your consideration and participation

May 17-19th, 2002

In late May of 1777, an attack was launched, from the Connecticut shore, against the British stronghold at Sagg Harbour, L.I., New York. This attack was prepared and carried out by the members of the newly organized 6th Connecticut Regiment.

The regiment, recently raised in New Haven, Conn., was given the task of destroying the British stores at Sagg Harbour as well as capturing all enemy that they could.

It was an amazing adventure, covering some 45-50 miles over water and land, meeting a brave and determined enemy, and returning to Connecticut. The attack left Guilford, Conn., on May 23rd with 13 whaleboats, 2 small armed sloops, and a determination to succeed. Travelling some 10 miles across Long Island Sound and landing at Southoldon the north fork of Long Island, the whaleboats were portaged across the sand dunes then put in again in Peconic Bay for the final travel, 7 miles by water, to Long Beach, just some 3 miles from the center of the village of Sagg Harbour.

The raid, against a determined enemy and a complete surprise, was highly successful, with 12 British ships burned to the water line at the docks of Long Wharf, some 90 prisoners taken (the entire British garrison), as well as tons of hay and rum burned and destroyed. The invading force then returned to the Connecticut shore with all prisoners. All of this was accomplished within 25 hours and without the loss of a single American soldier. This action earned the mission commander, Lt Col Return Jonathan Meigs, a Congressional sword, one of only 15 given for action during the American Revolution.

Now with all that said, won't you and your unit please consider joining the 6th Connecticut and the 3rd New York as we reconstruct and recreate the "Attack at Sagg Harbour, 1777"? This is a 225th event!

Initial plans call for camping at Haven's beach, in the village of Sagg Harbour, once a bustling fishing village and now a resort village on the coast of Long Island. Usual amenities will be provided and plans are in preparation for additional programs and camp areas. We are aiming to recreate this attack on a man-for-man basis, if possible, with a requirement for some 90 British forces (including naval merchanmen) and 140 American forces.

Setup will be available for Thursday, May 16th, for those of you that would like to be set up for the school visits of the camps on Friday. The schedule calls for a historic reproduction of the attack on Saturday and a free-form tactical is being planned for Sunday. Other activities are being planned as well.

Make your reservations now for this exciting event in the beautiful village of Sag Harbor, LI, NY. Please be so kind as to fill out the online registration form and send it back to us as soon as possible. Your cooperation and enthusiasm are needed to make this a successful event.

We look forward to seeing you there, in Sagg Harbour, may 17-19, 2002! Join us, won't you? And please feel free to circulate this invitation to other groups. Thank you!
